The Machine Knitter's Design Book
A book for ambitious beginners and for those machine knitters who have reached the stage when the machine is no longer dominant but does what it is told to do. The practical information necessary to produce stitch patterns and complete garments is included.
This is not an introduction to machine knitting, though Pope (author of The Machine Knitter's Handbook) does include some valuable information on yarns, techniques, and calculating designs and measurements. The best readers to tackle this book are those who are already knitting machine users but whose inspiration has dried up, since most of the explanations are couched in techno-language. Coverage of six different techniques, from the simple tuck and slip to complicated combination of patterns (e.g., cables and lace work), is followed by 14 well-designed sweaters to emulate, featuring African weaves, an art deco-like zigzag, and figural birds, among other things.
